“The Freedom Dancers” Burning Man 2026

The Story Behind The Freedom Dancers

The Freedom Dancers is a large-scale installation of seven 10-foot Tree Lady sculptures, each representing a stage of grief transformed into compassion through movement, color, and light. This project expands the original vision of my 2025 sculpture, Colors of Compassion, which explored emotional healing through color and personal reflection. That concept has now grown into a full circle of transformative figures — a collective journey made visible.

At the center of the installation stands the small Colors of Compassion Buddha, inviting participants to write reflections, identify where they are in their own healing, and contribute their voice to the space. It serves as the heart of the circle, the quiet anchor around which the Freedom Dancers rise.

Surrounding it are the seven Tree Ladies, each carrying a distinct emotional stage and color vibration:

Aurora — The Awakener (Silver/White)

Shock & Denial
The first light breaking through the fog, symbolizing awareness and truth.

Ember — The Heartfire (Red)

Pain
The tender ember of love that remains after loss, glowing at the center of the hurt.

Solara — The Transformer (Orange)

Anger
Fiery strength channeled into purpose, courage, and creative power.

Lyra — The Seeker (Yellow)

Bargaining
Reaching for clarity; turning questions into hope and alignment.

Maris — The Healer (Blue)

Depression
The quiet surrender that softens the heart and brings emotional depth into peace.

Verdan — The Grower (Green)

Reconstruction
Life returning — rooting, rising, rebuilding with community support.

Amara — The Illuminator (Violet/Gold)

Acceptance → Compassion
The final expansion into love, wisdom, and freedom.

Together, the Freedom Dancers and the Colors of Compassion Buddha create an immersive, walk-through environment where participants witness the emotional spectrum of grief and experience how creativity transforms it into compassion. The installation functions not only as art, but as a collective healing ritual, inviting every visitor to move, reflect, release, and rise.

The Freedom Dancers are supported by a series of Seven Healing Workshops, each aligned with one stage of grief and the Tree Lady who embodies it. These workshops invite participants to engage in personal expression while contributing to the creation of the sculptures.

Each workshop includes:

1. Color & Emotion Introduction

Participants learn the emotional meaning and color vibration of that stage:

  • Silver (Aurora), Red (Ember), Orange (Solara), Yellow (Lyra), Blue (Maris), Green (Verdan), Violet/Gold (Amara)

2. Intentional Artmaking

Attendees create a personal art piece—painting, journaling, sculpting, mosaic, or light work—infused with their own story, healing intention, or reflection.

3. Collaborative Creation

Those who wish may contribute directly to the Tree Lady associated with that stage:

  • Adding texture
  • Helping shape materials
  • Painting or color-washing surfaces
  • Assisting with decorative elements or finishing touches.

4. Community Reflection

Workshops include optional sharing, writing, or quiet contemplation. Each gathering becomes a space for connection, compassion, and collective growth.

5. Integration

All art created during the workshops either:

  • Is taken home as a personal healing artifact
  • Or becomes part of the Freedom Dancers installation

This flow honors both the personal journey and the collective sculpture, ensuring every participant feels seen, heard, and artistically included
